Friends Post

EDITED to reflect the state of my life as of December 2015 (at least this isn't as late as my last update)!

I officially declared my LJ to be semi-friends-only (which means that about half of the posts are friend-locked) on May 6, 2009. This was merely formalizing what had been my practice for quite some time... but these days, unlocked posts from me are rare.

In my journal, I post about the following things:

I) RL: This journal was established in early 2002 (when I was a 17-year-old Harvard sophomore) to talk about the events of my life (in a sarcastic, snarky tone), and even now, this is by far its primary purpose. For a brief summary, I was in academia for a long time (PhD earned from UCLA in 2011 followed by 2 years spent in 3 postdocs - with my first having been at the MSRI in Berkeley for fall 2011, my second being eight months in Helsinki in 2012, and my third involving two quarters teaching at UCLA and finishing a research program at IPAM... which marked closing of a long chapter of my life.

After finishing that final postdoc at UCLA in the summer of 2013, I spent a year in London trying to switch gears, ultimately earning a masters in econometrics and mathematical economics from LSE. The DAY after I took the final exam for that degree (pulling a 73 on that particular exam is one of the biggest accomplishments of my life ;)) I finally received a phone call I had awaited for two years: the first post-academic job application I had submitted had finally come through.

So I moved back to Maryland, where I grew up, to start my first non-academic, 'permanent', job as an applied 'mathematician'. My job can be ironically described as 'rent-a-genius', though for a number of reasons I don't go into too much detail about it on this blog. I've been working at this job for over a year, though I moved from Baltimore, MD to Arlington, VA at the end of June (my first move PURELY based on 'where I want to live' in my entire life!)

That said, I am also interested in economics (and the subtle skill of passing actuarial exams) and am not 100% sure which plan will FINALLY end up coming to fruition. I am 31 years old and male. As proud as I am of my physical appearance, I eat very indulgently (and will often talk at length about particularly delicious foods). That said, I learned back in late 2009 that what I thought was 'YES! I'm in shape!' was really 'being kept unnaturally thin by a condition so embarrassing that people refer to it by its initials'.

II) HP fandom: I have been an active member of this fandom since July 23, 2007 (yes, this is the correct date) and am a proud member of two sorting communities. As many of my LJ friends are part of these communities, I will often refer to them from time to time. To be honest, though, the fandom seems to be growing stale; while I HOPE to meet awesome new Slytherins, they seem to be few and far between...

III) Politics: I rarely talk about politics on my LJ, and when I do, it's usually exclusively for the purposes of snark and sarcasm. In general, I am extremely socially liberal (after twelve economics courses including a full year masters, I still lean liberal economically as well ;-)) and generally identify with the Democratic Party.

I will not defriend you merely because you disagree with me; being a douchebag, on the other hand, is a different story...

IV) Religion: I talk about religion even less than I talk about politics on here. I am a mildly observant Jew (in other words, I keep Passover, but do NOT keep kosher). If forced to pick a denomination, I would go with 'Reform', but that doesn't mean I agree with anything that the denomination does...

(Note that my 'defriend' disclaimer for politics also applies for religion; being a douchebag is still prohibited. That being said, my favorite anti-Semite is Eric Cartman.)

NOTE ALSO:
A) I love receiving comments; feel free to comment on any of my entries whenever you think you have anything to say! (In particular, definitely comment to this post when you friend me).
B) The content in my journal, on average, would generally rated BBFC 15, which means the following:

Theme

No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate to 15 year olds.
Language

There may be frequent use of strong language (eg 'fuck'). But the strongest terms (eg 'cunt') will be acceptable only where justified by the context. Continued aggressive use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.
Nudity

Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.
Sex

Sexual activity may be portrayed but without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour.
Violence

Violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. Scenes of sexual violence must be discreet and brief.
Imitable techniques

Dangerous techniques (eg combat, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on imitable detail. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.
Horror

Strong threat and menace are permitted. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable.
Drugs

Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse.

Should I feel the need or urge to go far beyond BBFC 15, I will warn you in the subject line.
B1) If you wish to use this journal to send me porn, it had better be done well... and all the characters involved should be ATTRACTIVE!

C) Out of respect to those of my readers who aren't interested in reading about particular topics, everything from II)-IV) (and everything which is long in I)) will be put under LJ-cuts. I also often put lots of topics in single post; this, together with the LJ-cuts, ensures that your list will not be clogged by stuff you don't want to read!

D) Those who want to learn what really makes me tick would probably do best by looking at my sorting questions tag and my Q&A tag (note that the ACTUAL name for the tag is in Finnish. ;))

E) For a more detailed read on some of the things that make me tick, go read this piece and this interview, though they may be a bit dated by now!

Hey twin of mine. Letting you know (repeatedly?) that I'm adding you back, and also that I read your intro post and am now taken aback at your intelligence/school success. Harvard? At 17? Don't expect anything nearly as merit-worthy out of my journal...

[identity profile] dalmasca.livejournal.com 2009-07-14 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey! You seem like an interesting person just from the way you sort people, I just got sorted over at [livejournal.com profile] hogwartsishome and actually submitted an app to [livejournal.com profile] sorting_elite but I chickened out yesterday and asked that my app be removed from the queue, I really don't know what pleases you guys over there, haha!

So I added you, hope you don't mind! :)

[identity profile] mmailliw.livejournal.com 2009-07-14 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you obviously have good taste; added! ;-)

(If you want to see what I think about H_E sorting, look at some of my recent posts here... and if you're afraid of getting Squibbed, just send your application my way and I can tell you what to change!

SO MANY great HiHers have written H_E apps below their potential... for example, all [livejournal.com profile] jessilestrange would have needed to do to get in was admit that she was afraid of flying - and then her Erised would have been seen as a GRYFFINDOR conquering of fears rather than a Gryffinpush!)

[identity profile] dalmasca.livejournal.com 2009-07-14 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, I'll send it your way in a minute, I'm only really nervous about a couple things (length being one of them, my journal history being another...)

But thank you!

[identity profile] mmailliw.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
The easiest way to send stuff to me is through gmail (mmailliw@gmail.com).

*coils around you and drags you down to the dungeons*

Dude. Just read that line again. Out of context. Seriously. There's some terrifying fanfiction buried there somewhere.

Oh, and Californians and MAGS:
a) you're originally from the East Coast where the ground doesn't move so you're excused, but
b) you now live in the land of brush/wildfires, rolling black-outs (and they don't even require alcohol!) and earthquakes, therefore, go buy a MAG.

[identity profile] mmailliw.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations on discovering the unofficial loophole!

(You can't reply to comments you like, but you CAN comment on people's friending posts - and I *totally* did that back when I was applying ;-))

And I shall do so, even if I'll leave LA in two months!

[identity profile] mmailliw.livejournal.com 2009-07-25 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
*smiles*

But of course! If you spent 4 hours on it, you're probably in decent shape... so send it to mmailliw@gmail.com (but be prepared for me to blast you for getting something wrong ;-) .)

You can tell that I was sick of seeing HiHers I liked writing H_E apps way below their potential and getting Squibbed; yes?

[identity profile] mizaya.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
I know I'm not supposed to reply to you until I'm in the community, but I saw your comment on [livejournal.com profile] callousandcold's post and I just wanted to say, thank you so much for making my night.

I had the same exact feeling when I saw her username and that her mood was set to apathetic. And her application made me feel so much better about myself and my app, which I at first feared wasn't up to community standards.

But your revised sorting song? Brilliant.

<3.

[identity profile] mmailliw.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
*strokes the young hatchling snake*

I'm sure we'll get along wonderfully!

P.S. It may be illegal to respond to VOTES given, but there's nothing wrong with introducing yourself to community members you like on their friending page during the voting process!

B-but... you're in Slytherin, right? Which must mean that you see me as a minion or potential resource!

Overall, though, this part is what got me the most:
"I find myself to identify with James Potter the most. As they did with him, many people either see me as a great friend or a cruel jackass. Either way, I plan to die young and leave quite the impression when I go."

...you plan to die young? Maybe she should be applying to a suicide help community. :|.

[identity profile] mmailliw.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

She should have looked up what house James Potter is in. (hint: it's NOT Slytherin!)

FWIW: I actually see James as both a great friend and a cruel jackass... but do the people who like her see her as a great minion or a great potential resource?

(P.S. I added you, if you didn't notice; I hope you don't mind the fact that I have a large number of friends - I've been doing this for more than seven years!)

[identity profile] mizaya.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
YOU MEAN TO SAY JAMES WASN'T IN SLYTHERIN?! Whaaaaat?!

"people who like her": ...do they even exist? I'm being a horrible person. I'm sure she has some...er, minions. Real or imaginary, you tell me.

I didn't notice, actually; I've been very sick the past few days and I'm pretty out of it. A large number of friends usually makes me question if the person actually wants to be a friend potential resource of mine, but I'm not worried about you in that respect. We know each other from a community and you've been on LJ since 2002. It concerns me when people add me because of my posts in fandom communities, have LJs only a year old, and already have 500-100+ friends.

I'll add you back right now! I hope you don't mind that my journal as of late has been fangirling all over the place and memes. I just don't have that much to post about since most of my time is spent building a portfolio to transfer universities. And I would be blogging about that, but the school in question is very competitive and accepts less than 10% of all applicants. And there are two other people on my list trying to get in. I... really don't like posting about what I'm doing because I get really competitive about these things and don't want them stealing my portfolio ideas.

[identity profile] mmailliw.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
GOOD LUCK!

I totally understand how you feel about ideas being stolen. Although this usually rarely happens in my field (we subspecialize so quickly and so deeply that anyone else in my department would need at least a year or two of further study to use a stolen idea), the fear is still VERY real. Like that time a few months ago where I saw the ONE grad student in my department who's clearly a much better mathematician than me reading the foundational book for my area...

[identity profile] mizaya.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I really need something to make up for my lack of experience in the field and the fact that my drawing abilities aren't as great as people who have been doing this for their entire lives.

I'm going to try to pull the overly creative angle with my portfolio, and stress how ambitious and driven I am in my essay. I'd be so angry if anyone stole my ideas (since some of them are quite amazing, if I do say so myself), so I'm avoiding posting about them in any way.

[identity profile] naobot.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I found you while looking through the current applications in [livejournal.com profile] platform934, where I am currently in queue. You seem really interesting and intelligent, and I'd like to add you!

You'll learn more about me when my application is up. I'm afraid it'll come off as pushy although I love all houses. (Especially Hufflepuff <3)

:D

[identity profile] naobot.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I forgot how to use the LJ-user code. Apologies!

[identity profile] blackestbird.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey there William ^.^

You recently sorted me, and I wanted to pop by and thank you for the flattering, well-thought out sort! You are correct too, btw, I am hopefully returning to my program in a couple of months. If I don't make the fall semester, I certainly will for the spring semester, in January. Spring is probably more accurate; I didn't exactly realized July is over xD

Also, I've seen your other sorting comments, as I had been lurking for a week[ish] before I actually applied, and you seem like a cool person. And I love you for making the comment you did about [livejournal.com profile] callousandcold's user name. I felt the same way; even her mood 'apathetic.' The whole thing... How I wish I had submitted my application sooner so I could get in on the voting.

Oh, and I am also gonna friend you. Friend me back if you'd like. My journal is a lonely one [I was a gj user, and have rather slacked on my lj journals], and you seem really awesome.

[identity profile] dalmasca.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a stalker...but LOL icon twins.

[identity profile] mizaya.livejournal.com 2009-08-04 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This icon always makes me laugh so much~

[identity profile] mmailliw.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes!

[identity profile] sparklycockles.livejournal.com 2009-08-21 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hi William! Do you remember me, from HiH?? I see you around, like, ALL the time! And I just love your comments and your ideas, and YOU!

Image

I'm so glad you got Transfiguration leader! I just flailed when I heard that! It's so nice to have someone you recognize as club leader, you know!? It just inspires this sense of confidence into you. You just know that the club is going to be amazing and that you'll be able to ask anything you like, question-wise! :D

So, I'm celebrating the return of my laptop and all my graphics programs, and I thought I'd make you a sigtag!!!

Image

Do you love it?

You seem like a smart guy, and I like the way you roll - add me back? x

[identity profile] mmailliw.livejournal.com 2009-10-01 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not?

[identity profile] hxcpunkchick.livejournal.com 2009-11-16 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Your comment on Twitter about my profile got me to "hunt" you down and finally add you. Hi!
